Such a famous brand and with an intriguing history! The H. Upmann name began in 1844,
when a banker from Germany, Herman Upmann began using imprinted
boxes of cigars, as promotional items. The brand was born. It was awarded
seven gold medals in seven international exhibitions, from 1862 to 1893,
images of these awards appear on the interior of the box today. The brand was purchased by the British firm of J. Frankau in 1922 and in 1935 by Mendez,
Garcia y Cia, just before nationalisation. They are still made in the
H. Upmann factory, preesently known as Jose Marti. A famous request made by
John F. Kennedy to his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, to obtain
cigars on the evening before the declaration of the American trade
embargo, in 1961, was for Petit Upmanns.
The
quality of these cigars varies as to whether they are machine, or hand
made. The machine made being well recognised as the superior of the two.
These fine cigars are smooth and mellow, tantalising the taste buds, like a smooth Irish whisky.
